The Triathlete Challenge
If you and your dog are a multi-tasking team, set your sights on the SPECIALTY TRIATHLETE CHALLENGE, a special award given to EACH Dalmatian/handler team that earns a qualifying leg or passing score in three (3) or more performance/companion venues during the National Specialty. The eligible events are: Road Trial – CC, RD, RDX classes; Tracking – TD, TDX; Agility – all titling classes; Obedience – all titling classes; Rally – all titling classes; Barn Hunt – all titling classes; Scent Work all titling classes; and FAST CATS. Both days of Fast Cats will count towards DCA’s triathlete award. If your dog’s qualification criteria for the triathlete award finishes with the Fast CAT runs on May 4th, you are welcome to attend the performance breakfast. However, you will not receive your award during the awards ceremony. The performance event chair will deliver your award to you later in the week.

Only one score or performance in each venue will count towards this award, and the performance must be at the titling level, although the dog/handler team may already have earned the relevant title. If your dog can hock, heel, sniff, run, or jump, just pick your venues and go for the challenge!

Link for handler/owner to fill out to register for the Triathlete Award.

The form needs to be filled out and submitted by Tuesday May 3rd at 6:00PM to receive the Triathlete Award at the Performance Breakfast.  Triathlete Awards that will be awarded after the Award Breakfast can be submitted until 6pm on Wednesday May 4th.

Meet our Judges:

Michele Anne Gillette, Hanover, VA

I grew up in an animal-loving household, and got a German Shepherd puppy for my sixth birthday. In 1978, while I was in law school, I got my first Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Rogue, who introduced me to the whole world of dog sports.

My legal career included both private practice and state and local government positions. Recently I retired from twenty years as an Administrative Hearing Officer with the Virginia Department of Social Services, hearing appeals in Child Protective Services cases.

Bitten by the tracking bug after my first TD, I applied to be a judge in order to give back to the sport that I had come to love. In addition to Tracking, I have also titled my dogs in AKC Conformation, Herding, Agility and Obedience. I have been privileged to own and handle some incredible Pembrokes and I have met the most wonderful people along the way. The late Roger Caras was right, “Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.”

It’s a pleasure to judge for the Dalmatian Club of America.

Jack E Sappenfield II, Durham, NC

I was introduced to pedigreed dogs as an adult and I happened to be fortunate enough to be adopted by a weimaraner that gave me the most love and affection that I had ever experienced by a dog. Fortunately, many more would continue to become a large part of my life.
Weimaraners have been my breed of choice since 1980. I have had wonderful boys and girls to be a part of my family and I will always have a Grey Ghost. As time went by though, I was introduced to vizslas and they were a welcomed addition to my weimaraners. My vizslas have also become an integral part of my family, and I will always have a red dog.
I have participated in obedience trials getting titles in Beginner Novice, Novice, Graduate Novice, Open and Rally.

Many of my dogs, both Weimaraners and Vizslas, have also gotten hunting titles.
We have had thirteen champions in our canine family.
Novice and advanced tracking titles on my dogs.

I became an AKC tracking judge in 1998 and have been approved to judge Tracking Dog (TD), Tracking Dog Urban (TDU), and Tracking Dog Excellent (TDX).
The Australian Shepherd Club of America (ASCA) approved me to judge their tracking tests.
I have given tracking seminars in North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, and in the Washington, DC area.

Three times tracking chair for the Weimaraner Club of America National Specialty.
In the past two years, the AKC has given approval to judge the 4 – 6 month puppies, Miscellaneous Breeds, and the Foundation Stock Service breeds (FSS).
I have been a member of the Weimaraner Club of America for 35 years, and a member of the Durham Kennel Club in Durham, NC for 25 years.

I am also the Durham Kennel Club Delegate to the AKC.
